Cosmetic Dermatology

Cosmetic dermatology refers to the use of minimally invasive surgical procedures that are used to enhance a person’s appearance. There are many different procedures that fall into this category, including microdermabrasion and chemical peels, just to name a few.

BOTOX® and dermal fillers are often used in cosmetic dermatology. BOTOX® injections are used to decrease dynamic wrinkles (those caused by muscle movements in the face) through the use of Botulinum toxin type A which in effect paralyzes the specific muscle causing the wrinkle. Dermal fillers are used to decrease the appearance of static wrinkles (those that appear when the face is at rest).

Chemical peels are also common to cosmetic dermatology. A chemical peel is the process of essentially resurfacing the skin using any number of acids which damage and remove thin layers of skin. This process is commonly used to reduce wrinkles, minimize acne scarring, and remove sun-damaged skin.
